Thermoforming 

Syntac is a syntactic composite material specially designed for fabricating thermoforming plug assists.
Syntac combines in one material all the properties desirable in a plug assist and avoids the various problems associated with aluminum, wood, felt or plastic.
Syntac - with its outstanding thermal resistance - does not draw heat from the sheet. As a result, sheet chilling is reduced, eliminating the sticking, fouling and mark-off which are such major causes of waste and downtime in the thermoforming industry.
This unique material is composed of a mixture of epoxy resin and microscopic hollow glass spheres. The spheres form discrete air cells to provide low thermal conductivity. These spheres also impart enormous strength to the epoxy matrix.
 “Syntactic” refers to the controlled distribution of the spheres, resulting in uniform properties.
Syntac plug are suitable for in-line, sheet-fed and rotary-fed operations.

Syntac^® Thermoform tooling
A microsphere / epoxy syntactic is finding growing use in plastics plants which manufacture packaging and other parts by the thermoforming process. Named Syntac^® 350, the syntactic is machined or cast in the form of plugs which assist the heated and softened plastic sheet to take the mold shape.
Syntac 350 resists heat transfer from the sheet, minimizing the risk of sheet sticking and fouling, which is a problem encountered with the aluminium plugs previously used.
Thanks to its low k-value, Syntac^® proves an outstanding mold material for thermoforming applications. The material is easy to machine in any shape with relatively simple tools and low tool forces. In addition to these advantages the material is non-toxic and is extremely stable. The material exhibits no warping and will promote consistent releases time after time.
