Syntac® 350

Syntactic composite tooling material for thermoforming

Syntac 350 is a revolutionary syntactic composite material designed specially for fabricating thermoforming plugs and other tooling.It is inventoried in block, sheet and rod form for immediate shipment, and can be easily machined into finished plugs with standard shop tools.
Cured Syntac 350 material as supplied is a rigid, high strength composite of epoxy resin and microscopic hollow glass micro-spheres. Typical properties are shown in the accompanying 
Syntac 350 plug material is engineered to eliminate problems inherent aluminum, wood, felt or Delrin tooling. Syntac plugs, because of their discrete air cells, have low thermal conductivity. They do not draw heat from the sheet, virtually eliminating the primary cause of plug sticking or fouling. They require little warm up. They are dimensionally stable and exceptionally durable. They are easily prepared, and replacement plugs are quickly made if needed. A Patch kit is available for repair of minor damage.
Plugs of Syntac syntactic can be used in a wide variety of applications, including components for packaging, aerospace, automotive, appliances and luggage.
Syntac tooling is suitable for in-line, sheet fed or rotary fed operations. It is also used for creating prototype tooling in other plastics processes.

Machining

Recommended speeds and feeds for turning Syntac 350 are as follow:

·         Speed:   500 – 600 g/min.

·         Cut size:    6,0 mm.

·        Feed: 1,7 mm/sec.

·        Tooling: Carbide; Maintain sharp edge with slight chip breaker.

 Safety
No special ventilation, personal hygiene, or flammability precautions need to be observed in handling this material. However, sanding, grinding and other machine operations will result in large volumes of nuisance dusts that may be irritating to the eyes and upper respiratory tract. Nuisance particle masks, safety goggles with side shields, and good local ventilation should always be used.
